How to Make Money Blogging in 2020 (The Beginners guide)

#1.Affiliate marketing

This is potential monetization channel for 90% of the bloggers. You really can make big money out of this.

Even a single sale could earn you $150. In fact, 80% of my revenue comes via affiliate marketing.

Simply to put, affiliate marketing is a method of earning a commission for every sale that happen through your unique affiliate link.

The commission value varies from $1 to $1000 depending on the product that you promote.

Here is how affiliate marketing works:

  • I sign up to a relevant affiliate program. For example, my niche is “blogging tips”, so I have been promoting only the products that are relevant & useful to my audience. Such as hosting, WordPress themes, and SEO tools.
  • After signup, you will get a unique affiliate link and banners that you can promote on your blog space.
  • Click reports and data can be tracked at your affiliate dashboard. For every sale that happen via your link, you will receive the commission.

How do I make money through affiliate marketing?

You can earn a very big money constantly through affiliate marketing only if you do it the smart way.

I only pick the reliable and reputed products and recommend them to my readers. Just for the sake of money, I can’t promote every product that I see on the Internet.

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you would have understand by now that I promote affiliate products through sidebar, header & footer space and links in the content (review articles and recommendations).

Here are some top affiliate products through I am able to generate my blog revenue:

Another great thing about affiliate marketing is, you can promote these products not only just through your blog, but also via channels like email, social media, forums, guest posting, etc.

With so many products offering affiliate programs to help spread the word about their product, the opportunities to make money blogging are massive.

#2. Ad networks

Ads is the first monetization channel that I pursued personally back in 2017.

I got approval to run ads from Google Adsense and Media.net programs. These are the two major and easiest ad networks that are currently reputed and most new bloggers prefers.

Your blog need to comply with the basic guidelines to get an approval and run ads. Here are they:

  • Great content that offer nothing but value
  • Must have at least 3 to 5 blog posts
  • You must create pages like ‘About’, ‘contact’, ‘privacy policy’, and ‘disclaimer’
  • Well on-page optimized blog structure

After the approval, you will have the option to show ads on your blog that are on the context of your niche.

The revenue potential of this channel depends on so many technical factors. Such as:

  • CPC of your niche keywords
  • Source, country of the traffic
  • User traffic number (views)
  • Ad placement and so on

I couldn’t continue monetizing with these Ads for a long time. Here are two usual reasons:

  1. Ads will slow down the loading speed of your blog and hurts the user experience.
  2. You need to have decent user traffic a day to make good money (They might pay you less than a dollar for thousand views a day, so you will need to pile up big user traffic to make money).

#3. Create and sell eBooks

eBooks (digital product) are nothing but the content that is written and published online in a readable form- Like a doc or online book.

Over the decade, eBooks are gaining massive popularity as people are loving to consume content on their digital gadgets, especially, Kindle e-reader.

Creating and selling eBooks for bloggers could cost nothing but some decent knowledge and design skills. With each sale you generate, the money directly fall into your bank account with a little commission to the seller platform.

eBooks have been one of my sources to make additional passive income without investing any money.

Not bad to make money blogging, Am I right?

How to create an eBook and make money blogging?

  • Decide the topic that you are good at and want to write about
  • Write down title of the eBook and chapter you want to cover
  • Create content (even on a word doc)

Once you are ready with the above things, you can even sell them (PDF format) on your blog directly with your regional payment gateway option.

That being said, you can sell the eBook on Amazon which allow you to upload the content in kdp format through their software. You can fix separate rate for eBook and paperback.

Comics, religion, weight-loss, stock market, success, motivation: you name the niche: there’s an eBook on it.

If you believe that you have decent knowledge about your niche, and can structure the content well, then eBooks could be one of the best ways to make money blogging given your talent.

Points to remember while creating an eBook:

  • Focus more on adding the value through your writing instead of worrying about word length. Usually, you can create an eBook with an average length of 5,000 to 10k words.
  • Keep the content in plain English, straight to the point without dragging and more engaging with lots of examples and experiences.

If your blog has already a good number of articles, maybe it is time that you structure that content into an eBook.

#4. Sell your blog space (Direct advertisement)

Renting your blog space could be your easiest and profitable blog monetization method ever. But to earn decent income out of this, your blog must have big numbers in terms of traffic, domain authority, fan base and engagement.

First, create a ‘media kit’ page on your blog by putting your stats. This way, the visitors have the chance to learn that they can advertise on your blog. Make it easy for them to reach you to discuss about the rates and terms.

When you use ad networks like Media.net or Adsense, indirectly, you are paying commission to them to find advertiser for you. Usually, this ranges from 15% to 30%. Here is an example:

Let’s say you are paid $100 by Adsense and if you had not lose 30% due to the ad network, your total earning would be $130.

What if I say that you can keep all the $130 to yourself?

Yes, it is possible through Direct advertisement.

Let’s understand how you can advertise to make money blogging.

Display ads

This could be in the form of banners of various sizes: Most common sizes are:

  • 728*90 (Placement could be Header, Footer, In-content)
  • 336*280 or 300*250 (Placement could be sidebar, In-content)
  • 468*60 (Placement could be In-content)

You can charge the advertiser weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly: depending on your blog traffic and authority.

Advertisers will provide you the banners that you can add through your WordPress dashboard. Few may ask you to work on CPA basis (Cost Per Acquisition). You will be provided with an affiliate link and when a user signup or purchase the product through that link, the sale is considered to be valid and you will get paid.

And few might just ask you to rent the space for a particular time with no such terms.

Now as I tell you how you can make money blogging through display ads, it is your turn to find out the advertisers who can pay you well. It is good to start reaching small and medium scale brands to ask them if they’re interested in promoting their products/services on your blog.

Product reviews

People who buy products usually check out for some reviews on the Internet before they make a decision. And that’s where you work with brands to help them with a good review and get paid.

Product reviews adds great side income to your overall blog income. Especially when you get a chance to review your affiliate products. You may be offered some money, trial or coupons for your readers to start.

The important thing you will need to consider is the value. Is this product benefits my readers or is it relevant to my niche (audience)?

If you’re a new blogger, big brands may not reach you to review their products. However, you can signup to their affiliate program and use the link in your product review article. As you grow your readership and authority in your niche, brands will ask you for a product review by offering their premium product for free for a while.

An example is product reviews I created for SiteGround, SEMrush, Social Snap, and Astra theme.

How to make product reviews work well?

  • Use eye catching screenshots, Images in your content
  • Write all you love about the product and how it can benefit your readers
  • Do not hesitate to pull up the cons of a product – But be gentle and honest
  • Add disclosure

Now, it’s your turn to explore and make money blogging with product reviews.

Sponsored content

You get paid when a brand pay you to publish their content on your blog. The content could be about the features, launching offer of their new product or a service.

Personally, I make $200 for every sponsored content that I publish on my blog.

Over the time, sponsored content has made its popularity in the digital space due to the win-win scenario for both publisher and advertiser.

A sponsored blog is not just about a plain advertising content flow with a backlink to the advertiser’s website, when done right by offering a great value to the reader, then it could do wonders in terms of SEO traffic and monetization.

If you have already good trafficked blog then it doesn’t mean you can publish any sponsored content on your blog. Be careful and recommend only the relevant and useful products to your audience.

For beginners, identify a handful of small and medium sized products that fit into your niche. Reach out to them via email with your rates and ask if they’re interested to get featured on your blog. Keep the email very simple and be honest about your blog stats.

Ultimately, as I mentioned above, you will need a media kit page to highlight your sponsorship opportunities and make money blogging.

#5. Freelance services

Since I began freelancing just over six months ago, I’ve earned more than $2000 so far by working in my flexible hours. Freelancing is all about offering value by selling your knowledge to the right people.

Once you start a blog and operating on it, you will encounter and learn skills like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), content writing, blog installation, proof reading, social media handling, marketing consultation, designing visuals, and so on. Am I right? Why not sell this knowledge and make money?

With freelancing, I not only make money but also I build relationships with brands, bloggers and influencers which help me in the long run to grow digitally.

Do not forget that you have a skill that can be used to make money blogging – even if it is writing an article or designing a landing page. Just be sure to build your blog with a decent readership that help them hire you quick and easily.

You can even freelance writers like Nikola Roza, Lisa Sicard who are able to make a good money by just writing content or handling social media for other bloggers and brands.

#6. Sell online courses and organize workshops

Do you have a skill or a talent you can teach others?

You can monetize your skill by creating an online course and selling it or teaching it through a workshop for an amount that fits the value you offer.

The best part of creating a course is that it is satisfying and challenging as you help beginners to get started with something online that help them make money. If you master at some area, there are brands and people who are willing to pay you handsome money to benefit from your skills.

If you are new to learn how to make money blogging then I recommend you to start with creating a course on “blog setup” or “blog niche selection” which you have already learned.

Creating a best and successful eCourse need energy and time but not necessarily money. Over everything, knowing your targeted audience and crafting the content will be the key to success. Here’s an A to Z resource about creating and selling course online – How to Create an Online Course for Free.

Eventually, you can organize a workshop in your locality or online to teach beginners and make money. The funny and truth is that you can even make money blogging by teaching people about how to make money blogging.

Trust is the key here. If you have been helping the community with your knowledge for a while, it is easy to bring that audience to your workshops and online courses.

You can also convert your existing blog posts as a video tutorial and create a 1-2 hour course. These video or audio courses can be sold on platforms like Instamojo where user pay you for the course and can download the courses.

If you are a fitness blogger, consider creating a 15-day weight loss workout that could include video tutorials about specific workouts, food diet, and otherwise.

  2. Hi Mudassir,
Wow, that’s quite a list you have here to make money online. It took me years to figure it out myself. Longer than 3! This year I’m focusing more on generating income from training, consulting and affiliate marketing vs. managing social media. I’m working on launching an online course on Twitter and a new eBook on the subject.
I’m also going to be learning more about Facebook ads, going deeper into them.
That’s the think about working online, we are always learning! I met with a client yesterday and through teaching learned something new. It happens all the time.
You’ve really upped your blogging this year Mudassir, here is to a profitable and happy 2020!
    (Thanks for the mention!)

    1. Sure. It’s always feel good to hear from you. I wish you well for the stuff that you’re going to try this year. Keep thriving and thanks for the appreciation, Lisa.

  3. Hi Mudassir,
thanks a lot for the mention bro. I think the two easiest ways to start earning from your blog are freelance writing and affiliate marketing.
Freelance writing because it’s fast and easy; affiliate marketing because it is highly sustainable and scalable

  4. There are some great ideas here Mudassir.

I started my blog last year and am not yet at the stage of thinking about monetization. I have a few links to affiliate products but I’m basically just trying to build traffic right now… which takes time!

Can I ask what works best for you in terms of making money through your site? I know you’ll be doing a mixture of things, but I’m interested is what you’ve found to be the best income stream.

    1. Thanks, Paul. Yes, I’ve started making money through multiple streams; affiliates, freelance writing, and publishing sponsored content. Out of these, the affiliate marketing stream has been working great for me. Writing helpful content for the top rich keywords and trying to rank them on Google makes my job easier to make decent profits through it.

I wish you a big success. Happy blogging!

  5. Your blog is full of valuable content. I agree with your statement we should not chase the money to make money, instead, we must concentrate on providing values.

  6. Hi Mudassir,

Nice writing about the ways to monetize a blog.

You are right, it is not easy to make income from blogging unless the blogger treats his blog seriously.

We need to create unique valuable content to attract visitors to a blog. It is not an easy job unless you like the topic you are covering on the blog. Once we have enough content, we need to promote the blog and get attention from fellow bloggers and earn links to get a decent rank in Search Engine results.

Once we have enough traffic, we can use Ads and affiliate marketing to earn revenue.

    1. Hello Siju,
