What is The definition of a blog and how it is different from a website?
What is a blog?
A blog is a website in a way, that publishes regular content about a particular topic(s), solve the problems of readers and build an audience base eventually. A blog could have a single author or a group of authors where all the authors focus on creating quality content and distribute online to achieve the goal of helping readers and monetizing the blog.
For example, you have visited this blog post which is a part of my blog (www.bloggingexplained.com). I regularly publishes content around the topic “blogging” to help users like you and I monetize through that process.
What is a website?
A website, on the other side, is a static that could have been created by an organization or a business to communicate and promote their products and services to its customers.
Here is a simple example of a website – www.microsoft.com – A firm that develop and sells software, and electronic gadgets. The sole purpose of this website is to communicate its customers and help them understand about their products.
You may get confused when you see a blog section on any company’s website.
The thing is that any business website can have a section of blog to regularly share updates about their products and to keep their customers updated.
For example, www.SEMRUSH.com, which is a SaaS based company that develop and sells SEO software to the bloggers and businesses around the world. But you will also see the blog section (www.semrush.com/blog) on their website. With the blog section, SEMrush will educate the users about various digital topics. By this way, SEMrush also will generate leads for their business and gain the trust.

Now you have learned an overview about a blog and a website.
Let’s understand what is blogging.
Creating a blog on a particular topic, designing it, writing and publishing content regularly (blog posts), building an audience for your content and monetizing – is all the part of the blogging.
For example: I have created this blog (www.bloggingexplained.com), way back in 2017. Since then, I’ve been helping readers like you to get started with blogging and making money.
- Writing and publishing content regularly
- Helping audience with your knowledge and engaging with ’em
- Researching, learning and implement SEO techniques to grow your blog
- Designing and maintaining your blog with WordPress.org CMS platform
- Monetizing (earning money out of your blog)
What is the purpose of a blog or Blogging?
If you are an individual who have knowledge on particular subject, you could start a blog, share your knowledge, eventually build an audience base and earn money – Just like me.
If you’re a business and already have a website then you probably know about the “business-blog” that can be attached to your website. On your blog, you could share new product/service updates and internal matters with your customers, share holders, partners and the users who visit your website. In your case, a blog could help you build the trust with the people who matter to you.
What are the common types of blogs?
Blogging could make you money, that is for sure. But all blogs are not created to monetize!
So before you get started, putting your goals and expertise on the table and understand what you want to achieve with blogging could make your life a lot easier.
Let’s learn the most common types of blogs are there on the Internet now.
1. Personal Blog
As the name suggests, a personal blog could be run by a single person who shares his/her personal life stories and happenings with the like-minded people.
I must say that personal blogs are the most oldest on the Internet run by the people who want to share their’s life day-to-day happenings with their friends or new audience.
You can also call personal blogs as online journals or diaries. By reading them, you get to learn about others’ perception, thoughts about a particular thing or situation.
2. Business blogs
As I have already talked about business blogs above, these are the part of a business or a firm’s website where the business owners share the service updates with their customers.
If you are a Dentist, you could start a website of your own by showing-off your talent as “Services” and add a “blog” section in it where you can share your knowledge about teeth and how to maintain dental hygiene. By this way, you’re not only helping others but also attracting the new readers to know about you and the services that you offer.
3. Niche Blogs
What are you good at?
Making variety of recipes?
Decorating your home nicely?
Knowledge on electronic gadgets?
Or something else…
You could easily turn your knowledge into blog and make money.
All you need to do is pick a niche (topic) that you are good at, understand the potential of the niche to earn, and continuously produce content to solve the pain points of the audience.
It is a good idea to cut down your niche to a smaller part if the whole niche is vast. For example, Sports. You may not have knowledge or time to create content on multiple sports like Cricket, Football, Basketball, etc. So you can just limit your blog to share the news and knowledge on one sport like Football.
All the niche blogs have the potential to earn money. You will need to produce great content regularly, build authority and trust around your audience.

Media blogs are nothing but news blogs that produces daily news on a particular topic or multiple. To create and successfully run news blog, you must have a fair knowledge on writing, professionalism, accuracy and budget to collect and filter true news to the audience.
For example – TechCrunch, which is a tech news blog.
Types of Blogging Platform (My 2 favorite, FREE and best Blogging platforms)
The popularity for blogging these days has occurred because there are easy to use CMS (Content Management System) platforms to support blogs and bloggers.
Don’t worry at all, if you don’t have any technical knowledge. Gone were the days where you would need to have HTML knowledge to create a blog/website and maintain it.
Thanks to ready-made CMS platforms like WordPress.org, you can create your blog in less than 30 minutes, design, publish content, maintain and monetize it smoothly.
Let’s learn about the best blogging platforms.
I use WordPress.org to run this blog, my other 2 blogs and my business website. In fact, 38% of all websites across the Internet use WordPress.org platform to maintain their digital operations.
It is easy to use, secured, highly customized, have tons of design options, and the best part is, it is totally free to use forever.
However, you will need a domain and hosting to start using WordPress platform, which you can get at HostPapa for an affordable cost.
If you ever want to start blogging and succeed in it, WordPress.org is your right choice.
2. Blogger.com (Blogspot)
It is another best free blogging platform and it is owned by Google.
If you have zero budget and want to get started with blogging, blogger is your choice. However, with a free service, you will not own your blog completely. For example, if you want to create a blog on your name, it would appear as www.yourname.blogspot.com. If you want to remove the “.blogspot” from your blog name, you would need to purchase a domain and attach it with your blogger account.
It has a decent collection of design options and objects but they’re not better than WordPress, if you ask me, my personal opinion though.
