You might already have heard a lot about the “blog commenting strategy.”
But did you ever consider it seriously to grow your blog?
After a long research and personal experiences, I’m bringing this “blog commenting guide” to let you understand whether the strategy works or not.

What is blog commenting SEO strategy and why should you do?
“Blog commenting is a process of building relationships with bloggers and their audience by commenting on their blog posts.”
Blog commenting could
- Bring you the decent user traffic
- Open up the doors for tons of guest posting opportunities and thus backlinks
- Help you brush up your reading and writing skills
- Help you become authoritative in your niche
- Of course, build long-run relationships
How blog commenting works?
To the point
- Set up a Gravatar account on WordPress.com (Add your real name, Image & email ID).
- Now you need to make a list of your niche-relevant blogs, visit them, read their content and drop your genuine thoughts.
That’s it. If the blog owner find your comments valuable, you could see yourself in their comments section.
Types of Blog comments
- No-follow link comments
- Do-follow link comments
Now let’s discuss a bit more about them.
No-follow link comments
These are the general types that we see on most of the blogs.
You enter your name, email ID, URL, and comment. You get a no-follow link with your name is Anchor text.
Here is how it looks:
CommentLuv blog comments
In default, all the comments on WordPress.org are counted as no-follow links.
But if you drop a comment on CommenLuv enabled blog post, you shall get a do-follow link to your blog. Well, I am not saying it, most of the experts do say that.
What is CommentLuv?
CommentLuv is a WordPress plugin that overwrites the above-mentioned default rule and gives you a do-follow link.
Here is an example of it…
It has a cool feature.
When you enter your blog URL, CommentLuv plugin automatically fetches your latest blog post and display it with the title as ‘Recently posted’ as you can see in the above picture.
It means, totally, you’re getting two do-follow links.
Do we really get a do-follow link through CommentLuv?
No one is so sure about it. Even I think how Google let someone to build backlinks in such an easy way.

Let’s go a bit deeper.
How to find blog commenting sites?
More than 90% of bloggers have enabled comments on their blogs. So all you need to do is find those blogs and bloggers. Here are some ways:
- Join blogging communities on Facebook
- Create an account on Twitter, Pinterest, Quora and find blogs by following topics related to blogging
- Spy on your competitors using tools like SEMrush
Now you have found the blogs which are allowing comments. The next step is to choose the blogs wisely to comment on. You can make a list through regular MS Excel or Google sheets.
Make a schedule to drop comments on those blogs.
If you are not sure about it, here is how I do it:
I already made a list of around 40-50 blogs on my Google sheets and I make sure to drop at least 1-2 comments daily on those blogs, number-wise.
Tips to make the most out of blog commenting strategy
Since you understand everything about blog commenting for SEO and growth, I don’t want you to rush making the mistakes and end up getting nothing through the strategy.
Here are a few tips that I have learned on time to time basis:
There are ways to do blog commenting – Manual & Paid.
Paid, such as using comment injector tools or hiring someone to do it.
I want you to go with the manual method but not paying to some agency or using a tool to get the work done. Bloggers are smart enough to find out who is real and who is commenting solely for link purposes.
So build long run relationships by being real.
Be human and conversational.
If you simply limit yourself to comments like “Awesome post”, “Excellent tips” or “great information,” your comment might get approved, but you will never be remembered by the people around you.”
But if you take the time to read the article completely and then go to publish a valuable comment, you will have better chances to understand the topic better and publish a comment gently. Here are some points to keep in mind while commenting:
- Add value. For example, the author might not have talked about a particular point from the topic. You can comment on it in a more personal way.
- Talk about your personal experience with the topic.
- Ask a question
- Be kind enough to appreciate the author in the end.
- Your comment could be even 1 sentence or 10 but it must be interesting to read and relevant.
- Address the author with his/her name with a greeting.
Personalize your comment with humor, fun, and passion that inspire other readers to pay a visit to you.
Sharing the blog post to your Twitter or Pinterest and mentioning the same in the comment creates a positive impact too. After all, we all love getting our content distributed across social media.

By taking a peek into it, you can learn the author’s and other commenters’ writing styles and how they are presenting their thoughts & opinions.
And it helps your mind to generate an effective comment instantly, especially if you are a beginner. Moreover, how can you construct a valuable comment if you don’t put the effort into reading the post properly?
Avoid maintaining the comment templates on your computer.
Well, I use to do that, had a couple of comment templates that I had been publishing on others’ blogs. I didn’t take much time to realize that mistakes and quitting.
Let me tell why you shouldn’t do that?
Assume you are a genuine blogger but still, you paste the same template on various blogs. It shows that you have no interest and seriousness respecting others’ hard work. If you keep doing that, the author shall ban you and if it keeps happening, you will be classified as a spammer, something you don’t want if you want to grow as a blogger.
Maintain the elements.
Constructing a comment in the RIGHT way is another major factor in blog commenting.
You have read the post but what if you’re not able to put your thoughts properly in a manner? Here is a common format for that:
- Greet the author by addressing with the name
- Your opinion on the subject
- Close the comment with a conclusion or a compliment.

This is the comment I captured on Navin Rao’s blog. As you can see, Enstine has nailed it by just doing it right. He impressed the author with his very first line and last lines.
I must say this type of compelling comments creates a good impact and increases other readers’ anxiety to visit and know about you.
Do it RIGHT!
- While creating a Gravatar account, I want you to use your real name, email ID and picture. But not a keyword/company name in the ‘name’ column.
- Don’t let your commenting effort go in vain by entering the wrong email ID and appearing as a spammer. Use only that email ID which was attached to your gravatar account.
- Now you have genuine intentions in dropping comments. But do you plan to publish those on relevant niche blogs? Always look for relevancy to drive more traffic and SEO benefits.
- Do not drop the link(s) in the comment column unless it is necessary.
Pick the point.
I want you to read the post till the end but I don’t want you to talk all about it.
Pick any sub-topic or a point from the article and comment about it. If you talk particularly about a subtopic or refer to it, the author understands that you’re a real blogger dug the article in-depth and shared opinion. It creates instant impact and makes the author remember you.
Give yourself that little extra push.
I know blog commenting benefits are not instant. But don’t let this reason demotivate and stop you commenting regularly.
Invest your time and energy with patience…
Develop a commitment for blog commenting as you did to starting a blog and scaling it.
All the continuous efforts pay-off one fine day.
Don’t be obsessive.
You don’t want to focus on blog commenting like you’re desperate to get the most out of it.
Slow and steady works fine.
If you keep building no-follow links through blog comments for a long time without having no one linking to you (do-follow) might also look like a link building scheme in the eyes of search engines.
So, grow your network through blog commenting and level it with guest posting strategy as well.
Is that all about blog commenting now?

1. Vishwajeet Kumar from Blogging gate
Blog commenting is a great way to build a relationship with other bloggers. Make sure your blog comments are authentic and relevant to the topic. Making vulgar/offensive and one-line comments won’t work at all. Dropping a comment with a personal approach is very helpful to build a bond with bloggers. In this way, people would also want to know more about you.
2. Lisa Sicard from Inspiretothrive.com
When you are blog commenting be sure to mention the author’s name. It’s like you are chatting in person.
“Hi Mudassir, how are you today? I love what you wrote about xyx but I agree or don’t agree about xyz.”
Then add some other information to the post if applicable. End with “have a great day or week”. Make it more personable with your commenting. I try to comment on at least 5 blog posts per day.
3. Nikola Roza from Nikolaroza.com
Blog commenting works, but I need to clarify a thing.
Targeted blog commenting works.
What I mean is there are too many influencers online for you to connect with by leaving comments on their blogs.
There’s just not enough time in the day and there are more important things you should be doing.
Instead, a smarter approach is to pick 20 influencers that are a bit further along in their blogging journey compared to you (but not too much).
So you’re looking for mid-sized bloggers that also nurture and cultivate an active community on their blogs.
Because there’s no point in commenting in places where everyone can and with zero moderation.
So, gather those names in a spreadsheet and start commenting, ideally, you want to visit and revisit those blog 3 times per week. So 3x 20= 60 comments or about 9 per day.
Can you manage that over a period of several months?
If yes, then you will reap the benefits of blog commenting and that is building genuine connections within your niche.
The tangible results for you will be:
- more comments on your blog,
- more shares
- and more links over time.
All this translates to you getting Google traffic making affiliate sales and having a business on your hands.
But it all starts with you being targeted with your blog commenting efforts.
It makes no sense to leave 100 comments on s 100 blogs. That’ targeted and wasted work for you.

Ensure to read the post properly and do NOT take it to heart that you already know the topic.
Yes, you may know it, but the author may have come up with an angle that is new to you, or he may miss vital information that should have been included. So it is by reading the post material that you can come up with meaningful comments. The comments you make present you as an expert in your niche. In view of this, if you fail to read the blog post and make comments that are out of place, it will hurt your reputation and brand. Therefore, read the content carefully, then look for one or two loopholes and fill them up in your comments.
5. Navin Rao from Questioncage.com
For Me Blog Commenting is Magical.
This is how I made a lot of friends and that allows me to connect with them regularly.
In the Blogosphere having friends are the key to success. Well, I understand, blog commenting is also a way to obtain a lot of backlinks. Even if it is no-follow is valuable. Although those links might not help you to rank your pages, still it’s a good practice.
Not to forget, the links will live on the blog forever and that can send you referral traffic and those visitors may become the regular one.
But, blog commenting is not just putting a line and work for you. You need to provide value to the blog post with your comment. I appreciate the webmaster’s effort for putting that massive content altogether.
Read the blog post and then comment, at least skim it thoroughly, then you will have enough substance to write. Maybe you can also raise the points with are not covered, which will be also value addition to the blog post. Always use your original name, not keywords.
Be authentic and speak your mind.

Blog commenting has always been a powerful promotion and networking tool. In the early days of blogging, it was great in creating SEO backlinks. Google, however, has changed a lot, making the backlink value from the comment section very near nothing.
I think if you approach blog commenting with the motivation to create connections, you are certainly going to get other advantages added to the connections.
The reason is that hooking up with the right people in blogging is a huge step towards growth. Here are some tips to comment for connection:
- Read the articles properly
- Read other comments if available
- Drop a relevant comment
- Make it personal and conversational
- Appreciate the blogger for posting the content
- Comment again to comment.
Sticking around a blog with more relevant comments raises you above the average reader. You will always get noticed by the blog owners and if you add real value, the magic of networking will roll in.

As the highest value component of Networking, Blog Commenting is a lot more powerful and effective than you ever imagine.
Not only effective as a link building technique (argue that) but as a great tool to connect with influencers in your niche. Easier said than done right?
So how do you do blog commenting the right way?
Capture your targets: Don’t be a jack of all trade. Find mid-influencers in your niche, Open your spreadsheet and prepare your long list (as many influencers as possible).
If you are in the marketing niche, you don’t want to target Neil Patel or Brian Dean. They are too busy, so it’s difficult to impress them.
For the rule of measurement, Target influencers with Domain Authority (DA) between 25 to 50. Not advisable to go for anything below or beyond.
Bonus: For better productivity, focus on influencers that suffer low comment rate. Anything below 10 comments (in 30 days) is a good target.
Schedule your comment list: Let’s say you compiled a list of 50 influencers, divide them into 5 different groups (10 per group). That way, your list will be more organized and stress-free to use.
Start shooting your shots: Now it’s time to start dropping those awesome comments focusing on a single group per day. However, there are few things to put in mind while doing blog commenting:
- Must have a Gravatar account
- Start comment with Salutation + Influencer Name (Hi James, Hey Mudassir)
- Appreciate their content (eg. This is a super amazing piece)
- Contribute your Idea (Minimum 40 words)
- Delve more into a section of the content and speak from your personal experience (If Any)
- Mention your name at the end (Optional)
Rinse and Repeat: As you might have guessed, Influencers are pretty busy. Don’t expect to get noticed soon. Crave for longevity; build a better relationship via weekly commenting on different posts.
By the time you continue this approach for 8 weeks, you no more a visitor, many influencers already have you on their radar. It’s then easy to pitch them (Guest Posts or Backlinks).
Bonus: Immediately you comment on influencers’ content, share it on social media (most preferably Twitter) and mention them.
The above technique already helped me connect with great influencers’ in my niche, it can help you too.
